Always use secure browsers
- Some browsers are more secure than others, and specialists recommend Mozilla Firefox as the most trusted option. If you’d like another alternative, check our Tor.
- For phone browsing on Firefox download app Firefox Focus is a mobile app that erases your browsing history once you exit the app. It’s like browsing in incognito mode.
- URLs that begin with https instead of http, enable encrypted connection making it difficult for others to eavesdrop on your communications with that website. Before submitting sensitive information, make sure you’re on a https website.
- We recommend you install Https Everywhere on your Firefox (or Chrome Extension) that automatically creates an https connection when a website offers this option. Important to know: HTTPS does not protect others from knowing that you visited a website; only the information exchanged with the website is protected. Using HTTPS is not sufficient to stay safe.
Use a VPN for anonymity if you can
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows you to connect to the internet anonymously and helps you get around blocks and access censored sites.
On VPN, your online activity can’t be tracked by hackers or government spies. You should always use a VPN whether you’re connecting to public wifi networks (e.g. cafes, hotels) or at home. A VPN can also be used to bypass regional restrictions on streaming video services.
Sounds great! How do I get on VPN?
You can use HOLA VPN for your web browser. It’s free if you only want to use it for some websites! And this is what it will look like:
The paid version allows you to access all websites. See pricing below.
An alternative to Hola VPN is Firefox Private Network. For phone browsing on Chrome you can use Psiphon VPN.
Securely Store Your Information
Keybase is an industry favourite for everything from secure chat to file transfer as well as file encryption.
You can also check out two zero-knowledge cloud storage companies (basically meaning that nobody, including the government or authorities, can have access to your files): MEGA or Sync.com
Note: MEGA gives you 50GB of storage for free (vs 5GB for Sync.com).
